Abstract

In this short note we propose the storytelling of Colonel Pompeo Moderni, a soldier and a geologist, and of his family's troubles during the Great War. Pompeo worked as a field geologist in the Royal Geological Survey of Italy, contributing to scientific exploration and mapping of Central Apennines; in 1915, already elderly aged, he faced indirectly war operations, suffering the loss of his young only son Mario on the eastern front. Colonel Moderni personal story is thus remembered in order to honour the memory of all those people, on both sides, involved in the first great tragedy of the 20th century.
